These pictures were taken from a spot towards the south of the campus - the university's oldest and, I think, most attractive part. I'm particularly pleased that the place was so sunny when I took the photographs, as that's the way I remember it from my time as a student there.

The large concrete building just right of centre is Derwent College, the oldest of the university's colleges. It was constructed in 1963-64, using a prefabrication system especially devised to allow the university to open as quickly as possible, and was officially opened by the Queen on 22nd October 1965. To the right of Derwent is Heslington Hall, originally built in 1565-68 and substantially refurbished in the late 19th century. As well as being a centre of the Lord Deramore estate, it was used as a military base in World War Two and was acquired to form part of the new university in 1962.

Next to this is the Walled Garden, containing the bizarrely-shaped descendents of an 18th-century topiary garden, marked at the far end by the gazebo from the same period. The gazebo is now called "The Quiet Place", a beautiful place to sit for a while. Further around is the pathway leading to Spring Lane and the Vice Chancellor's house. To the right of that is the south end of the university's famous man-made lake, and in the background stands Langwith College, the other of the university's original colleges.

£5.00 from the sale of each of these pictures will be donated to the University of York's Alumni Fund, to help people access university who otherwise might not be able to. This is why I have not limited the number of copies of this picture I will produce, and the price is lower to reflect this.

This picture can also be seen in The Braithwaite Gallery, Low Petergate, York.
