![]() Click here to see a larger preview of this picture These pictures were taken from a spot towards the south of the campus - the university's oldest and, I think, most attractive part. I'm particularly pleased that the place was so sunny when I took the photographs, as that's the way I remember it from my time as a student there.
The large concrete building just right of centre is Derwent College, the oldest of the university's colleges. It was constructed in 1963-64, using a prefabrication system especially devised to allow the university to open as quickly as possible, and was officially opened by the Queen on 22nd October 1965. To the right of Derwent is Heslington Hall, originally built in 1565-68 and substantially refurbished in the late 19th century. As well as being a centre of the Lord Deramore estate, it was used as a military base in World War Two and was acquired to form part of the new university in 1962. |
