St. Mary's Square

This is the first picture I completed, and is of one of my favourite spots in York. I especially like the green signpost that's displayed towards the right of the picture - for some reason I find it particularly picturesque with the church wall in front and the shop fronts behind it.

Signpost on Castlegate Window of St. Mary's Church Hanging basket outside Coppergate Gallery Headstone in St. Mary's churchyard

The prominent building in this picture is St. Mary's Church, now used as a museum and exhibition centre. The shopping precinct in the background is St. Mary's Square itself, part of the Coppergate development built in the early 1980s. It was while the foundations were being dug for this square that the Viking remains were found that eventually led to Jorvik, the Viking centre (just around the corner, behind the church).

Also in this picture, seen between the Coppergate Gallery and Rustique Restaurant, is Castlegate House - now home to both the Provincial Grand Lodge of Yorkshire North and East Ridings, and the Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests. The road in front of these austere premises is Castlegate, once a major thoroughfare but now an often-overlooked little street leading from Coppergate through to Clifford's Tower, the Castle Museum and the Eye of York.

This picture can also be seen in The Braithwaite Gallery (Low Petergate, York) and in Rustique Restaurant (Castlegate, York).
